In 1970, Muammar Gaddafi invested in a bank that, in turn, offered the locals living in Cyrenaica a unique opportunity. This initiative, funded by #Banca di Roma – one of Italy’s largest banks – provided free education to the residents. This move would change the course of Luna’s family history forever. Luna’s grandmother, Marsa Susah, named after the ancient city in Cyrenaica, took advantage of this educational opportunity, which laid the groundwork for her family’s migration from Libya to South America.
Though Luna could not remember much about her grandmother, she recalled her cryptic statements about Luna’s future. Luna remembers her grandmother’s cryptic statement: “Mi Luna and your imagination will give birth to the 13th, completing the cycle.” Luna remembered her grandmother mentioning the women meeting in the light of the night but never heard any individual stories about these women from her mother. Luna’s mother told her fragments of these stories each night before bed. After her mother passed away, Luna wondered if her ancestors’ stories were true. [Luna stretched her shoulders, recollecting her mother’s soothing voice reciting their ancestors’ names.]She fondly remembered her mother and grandmother’s presence and wisdom.
